As someone who tends to dress fairly simply, I put a lot of emphasis on the details. Selecting items that inject one of those three core styling principles of shape, colour or texture (which side note, if you want to check out my latest YT video on dressing monochrome, you can watch it HERE). And I think this outfit is a good example of that. It’s tonal, shades of white on white. But then I added in texture with the shoe - otherwise classic in design but the woven leather makes them feel a little more special. And the knitted cardigan itself has sculpted sleeves and pinches in at the waist. Basic but not basic, if you catch my drift. Most importantly, all three items feel fairly carefree. I can’t remember what bag I wore with this outfit but I assume it was probably my Madewell bucket tote or this bag from Saben.
Clearly I’m not the type of person who worries much if my whites don’t “match”. My only key criteria? They have to be the same temperature - cool or warm. Otherwise there’s an obvious disconnect that’ll glare at you every time you glance at yourself in the mirror. I’ve always been partial to a double denim look, but have found myself opting for this type of combination with gusto in recent months (blue, faded black, white). And I think because there’s a safety in wearing what is essentially a matching set or a suit of sorts because formulaically all that’s required is a neutral top and shoes that *go* with.
BTW for those of your who also have kids like me and are wondering how I manage to get away with an all white outfit… As a rule of thumb, I seldom, if ever risk wearing something white around my kids if I want to keep it looking pristine. IYKYK.
My very fail-safe, kid-friendly winter outfit. A chunky oversized knit worn loose or partly tucked. Dark denim, usually in a full-length style. Comfortable shoes - in this case, a flat black boot. And the bag that fits in everything. Not groundbreaking at all, but comfortable, reliable; can’t go wrong, really. Also if you’ve had your eye on the sweater, it’s currently 50% off and available in almost all sizes.
See, another variation on the previous outfit. Wear, rinse, repeat. In any situation where you don’t have very much time at all to dedicate to getting ready into the morning, having some sort of uniform to fall back on is incredibly useful. While the items aren’t the same (aside from the bag), it’s a variation on the previous “recipe”.
